INFORMATION LITERACY
(Excerpted from Standards and Guidelines for Strong School Libraries. California School Library Association. 2004)
DEFINITION AND BRIEF HISTORY
Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning (American Library Association, 1998) defines information literacy as the ability to access and use information. Information literacy is identified as the keystone of lifelong learning and should be at the very center of every school library media program.Information literacy skills provide the tools that enable students to access, evaluate, organize and constructively use information to answer a question and solve a problem.
Twenty-first century students are overwhelmed with vast amounts of information, forcing them to constantly make choices about which information sources and resources they should use. Students must understand that information is little more than random data until it accessed, evaluated, organized and used to solve problems. When this occurs, knowledge is created. Students who are active seekers of knowledge and understanding will become tomorrow's successful leaders and contributors to the society in which they live.
